Spray booths are used by a variety of different sectors, including the automotive industry, manufacturing and retail. They can be used to repair bodywork on a vehicle, change the colour of a car, or to create custom designs and art for shop fittings, musical instruments and much more.
Spray booths are a highly versatile and useful piece of equipment, but how do they actually work? If you want to know more about the process, see below for our handy guide.
Air pressure
Spray paint booths work by manipulating the principles of positive and negative air pressure. Clean, fresh airflow is essential in order to achieve the best results and to ensure the working environment is safe, so how does this work?
Spray booths are equipped with an exhaust fan which draws air contaminated with overspray or particles out of the booth. These contaminants are then caught by a filter which removes the excess particles from the spray booth area. There’s also an air replacement fan; this pushes fresh, clean air into the booth as the contaminated air leaves, to keep the air pressure at a consistent level.
Positive and negative
If just the exhaust fan is on, this creates negative air pressure in the booth, as more air is being removed than pushed in. This means that outside air is pulled in if the door is open, along with contaminants like dirt and dust. However, if just the exhaust fan is on, the air pressure will be positive and air is pushed towards the door when opened. This helps to keep the interior of your booth clean, but the ideal air pressure is achieved by running both fans at the same time.
Filters need to be cleaned regularly to prevent buildups of overspray particles. If a filter is clogged, the exhaust fan will struggle to pull air through it and you won’t achieve the optimum results in your spray booth.
